Paragard is a hormone free intrauterine contraceptive device that is placed in the uterus. It prevents pregnancy by preventing sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg, it also inhibits implantation. It is effective for up to 10 years. Less than 1 in 100 women become pregnant with the Paragard.

Pros of Paragard

It is safe while breastfeeding.

It is placed in the Doctor’s office
It is easily removed by your provider if you decide you would like to become pregnant

Cons of Paragard

Discomfort during placement
Heavier or longer periods during the first few months

Changes in bleeding patterns during the first few months

Side Effects of Paragard

Spotting between periods
Heaver periods during the first few months

Women who may not be a candidate for Paragard

History of Pelvic Inflammatory disease
Have an untreated pelvic infection

Undiagnosed bleeding
Recurrent ectopic pregnancies

The Paragard IUD does NOT protect you from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms to protect yourself from these infections.
